Andrew Powell is a renowned composer, arranger, conductor, producer, whose talents span across various mediums including concerts, records, film, television, and theatre. His musical journey includes studying composition under Cornelius Cardew, piano with Malcolm Troup, and percussion with James Blades. He furthered his education by attending Stockhausen’s and Ligeti’s composition classes at Darmstadt before pursuing Music at King’s College Cambridge.

During his time at King’s, Powell co-founded the progressive rock group "Henry Cow" with Fred Frith and Tim Hodgkinson, and the live electronic music ensemble "Intermodulation," collaborating with Roger Smalley, Tim Souster, and Robin Thompson. This period saw them premiering several works by Stockhausen. Powell later collaborated with Boulez and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Simultaneously, Powell left his mark in the rock field as a session player and arranger for esteemed artists such as Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, Al Stewart, John Miles, Pilot, Mick Fleetwood, and Chris Rea. He ventured into production and arrangement, notably contributing as producer and arranger for Kate Bush’s first two albums (including the songs Wuthering Heights, The Man With The Child In His Eyes and Wow). Additionally, he lent his arranging and composing skills to The Alan Parsons Project's discography.

Powell has a prolific songwriting history, co-authoring songs with notable figures like Al Stewart, Alan Parsons, Tim Rice, David Paton, and Menna Elfyn. His compositions have graced Hollywood films like "Ladyhawke" and "Rocket Gibraltar," as well as TV productions across Europe. Noteworthy among his commissions are pieces like "Tair Cerdd Sanctaidd" and "Y Dyn Unig."

Currently, Powell is immersed in various projects, including collaborating with The Wallace Collection on a CD featuring his music for brass and electronics, set for release in Spring 2024. He's also working on a new commission titled “Pentre Ifan” for solo horn and live electronics, with the electronic components crafted at IRCAM in Paris, a place he’s frequented for over a decade. Additionally, he's preparing a CD showcasing his solo piano compositions.
